Online since September 2002, Star Wars: Reach of the Empire is a text-based homage to the imaginary universe created by filmmaker George Lucas. However, this game diverges significantly from the accepted Star Wars canon in such a way that the events of the original trilogy can't quite come to pass.

For example:

- Luke Skywalker died in a skyhopper crash in Beggars Canyon on Tatooine two years ago.

- Bail Organa, adopted father of Princess Leia, remained loyal to Emperor Palpatine and turned in Mon Mothma as a traitor. She was executed.

- Leia Organa became a Sith apprentice for Palpatine, but died in a lightsaber duel against Obi-Wan Kenobi in Cloud City on Bespin.

- Alderaan didn't get blown up by the Death Star. But Ryloth and Klatooine, allied with the fledgling Rebellion, were blasted to dust.

The fates of the major characters in the original movies became so altered that our version of the Star Wars galaxy has a different destiny.

A destiny where the Emperor's power grows. Where armor worn by well-trained stormtroopers actually works and the soldiers are talented enough to hit the targets they aim at. Where factions struggle against each other to remain in favor with the Galactic Empire or, if they choose to rebel, risk annihilation.
